Senior Day: One Last Home Game for Senior Baseball

Brandon Abrenica, Staff Reporter

Senior Day is the most important day for Varsity Athletes as MBHS. It is a day teams celebrate their seniors and look back at the legacy they are leaving behind.

On Thursday, April 30, Millennium Phoenix’s Seniors, Matthew Weldon (MHS), Thomas Caruso (MHS), Noah James (MBHS), and I played on our home field for one last time.

The bleachers were filled with fans from both schools such as fellow classmates, teachers, and even alumni players. Before the game, all the seniors were given portraits of themselves as a gift for Senior Day.

The game started with a ceremonial first pitch thrown out by Gabriel Pimentel, an alumni baseball player. He threw a curveball that bounced off the plate and landed perfectly into the catcher’s glove. The Phoenix were ready to start the game against Tottenville High School.

Thomas Caruso was the starting pitcher. He started off the game very strong.  According to PSAL.org, through 3 innings of work, he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, 3 K’s, and no walks. He was pitching a great game. However, the defense could not back him up. During the 4th inning, the defense had its worst inning of the season. Ground balls went through some of the infielders legs, took bad bounces over their heads, and even just flat out miss playing the balls in the outfield. The Phoenix’s offense was not much better. Hitters were not able to figure out Tottenville’s pitcher. Tottenville beat Phoenix in 6th innings with a score of 11-0.

Although the Phoenix was not able to get a win for the seniors, it was a good game and everyone on the team played with heart and intensity. Coach Friedman was proud of his team and his seniors. He praised them saying, “seeing our four seniors that have been working so hard for four years together on the field at the same time was a special experience for me and I’m so proud of the work they’ve put in day in and day out.”
