Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the greatest American medical drama television series airing. The first episode was aired on March 27, 2005, almost exactly 12 years ago. According to Tv By The Numbers, Grey’s currently has 7.68 million viewers even after an entire 12 years of show time. With such a high number of viewers, it is possible to say that the show is indeed a good one. The amount of drama within the show is what keeps the viewers interested. Many of the characters in Grey’s Anatomy engage in relationships at work which cause them to struggle with balancing their personal relationships and their professional ones. This struggle of imbalance within the show is what causes so much tension and drama, which is what engages the audience. The first episode of the show begins with the main character Meredith Grey, having a one night stand with a man who turns out to be her boss when she shows up for her new job. That itself is already a sticky situation and is just a little taste of what the entire series has in store.

Helen Albornoz, a senior at MBHS, who is a big fan of Grey’s Anatomy states, “ I love the show because all the drama in their lives is very interesting and it would make me keep watching a few episodes per night. All the relationship connections throughout the show become intense and ends up causing a lot of issues, which also helped me fall in love with the show.” On the other hand, an anonymous senior from MBHS who is not a fan of the show states, “I watched the first episode, and immediately was uninterested. I thought that the fact that she slept with her boss was corny so I figured the entire show was going to be corny to be honest.” Interest in the show all depends on the type of person you are, and what you like to watch on TV.

Shonda Rhimes, the producer of Grey’s Anatomy has a clear pattern with drama throughout her other shows as well. The tv series Private Practice is a spin off from Grey’s Anatomy which was also produced by Shonda. Being that it is a spin off, the show resembles Grey’s in many aspects. It has its fair share of relationship issues and drama that affects each of the characters. Shonda also has the television series Scandal, which is a political drama that takes place in a crisis management law firm. In this show, there are also inappropriate work relationships that affect the work environment and cause some tension. Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal all have a soaring number of viewers. The one thing that they have in common is the dramatic aspect of the show, so it could be safe to say that the drama and tension is what keeps the viewers watching these great shows.
