The Inside Scoop On Mr. Franklyn

The Inside Scoop On Mr. Franklyn

As a young boy growing up in Trinidad, Nigel Franklyn (or Mr. Franklyn to staff and students at MBHS) knew that “Chemistry [was his] passion” and destiny. Mr. Franklyn attended Brooklyn College where he majored in Chemistry with a 2nd degree in Chemistry Education, and 3rd-degree in school supervision.

After working with the New York City Department of Education for 16 years, he is now an Assistant Principal of MBHS, which was recognized through the company of Manhattan Media as receiving a  “Blackboard Award for Outstanding High School.” Mr.Franklyn strives “to improve the quality of science education for the children of our city.”

“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is a frequently used quote when it comes to dealing with other individuals and can relate to Mr. Franklyn.  A freshman that attends  MBHS, who chose to stay anonymous said, “he seems very scary, but I’ve never spoken to him.”  On the other hand, seniors Lylens Lubin and Evan Sinclair who have been in MBHS three more years, agreed that “he seems very intimidating,” and “he looks strict,” but emphasized that “he actually cares about everyone and wants all his students to succeed in every way.” They also said that “he’s understanding and nice once you talk to him.”

That same six foot two administrator who is known for his famous line of “Get to class” has more to him than helping students achieve academic success, and, like many, has a life outside of MBHS. Mr. Franklyn enjoys “hunting, fishing and swimming in tropical beaches,” and one of his favorite hobbies is “working on classic roadster cars.”

As a part of one of the many growing high schools in Brooklyn, Mr. Franklyn plans to use his position as an administrator to “continue the work of ensuring quality instruction for all students and see Millennium’s model of teaching and student learning expand to serve more students in NY.”
