How Time Management Impacts Students and What to do About It

Time is something you can lose and never get back. Many students can relate when they have to balance out going to school, extracurriculars, jobs, internships, homework, and studying. Most people know themselves enough to know whether or not they have an issue with this, but don’t know how to what to do about it.

Isabella Castillo, a junior at MBHS says, “trying to have better time management is so hard when you’re part of a team and live far from school. I live in Queens and I’m on the swimming team and balancing out swim with school work and studying as well as finding time for myself is hard, partly because I know I can’t manage my time.”

There are many things you can do to have better time management. Ms. Mottahedeh, the college advisor at MBHS, suggests a few ways students can help themselves along. She says, “there are simple strategies that people use, like a planner or calendar. I think it’s more important for students to understand that time management is bigger than just another skill you need for school. Learning to manage your time and responsibilities can essentially help you learn how to prioritize and navigate what you ‘need’ to do in order to have more time for what you ‘want’ to do. This is a really hard thing to do and it’s something you never really stop learning.”

According to www.lifehacks.org, some ways to better plan your time are:

  • Tracking the time you spent doing one thing
  • Block out anything that can be a distraction
  • Use an organizer to plan out what you have to do
