MBHS Swimming: A New Wave

Vincent Estrella, Staff reporter

At MBHS there is a plethora of sports and clubs to join. One of the newest additions to the sports community is the swimming team & club led by new MBHS staff member, Coach Zhu. I had the chance to catch up with one of swimmers, Kalyn Boudinot, and get a behind the scenes look at some of the aspects of one of the newer contributions to the MBHS sports society.

Since it’s so new to the school, many may be hesitant to immediately jump into a new environment without really knowing what you’re getting into. However, Boudinot says, “[Coach Zhu] is really supportive and will help you train to be the best you can be.” Those looking for a challenging but supportive environment to grow in the field, this is the place for you. “It’s a commitment but it’s worth it,” she says.

Swimming is also new in that it’s a fresh look at a team sport where you have to perform individually more than others. Once you’re in that water, it’s you versus every other lane. Boudinot says,  “There’s no one to blame but yourself when you don’t beat your time or pace yourself in the water. Of course you have to support your teammates on the sidelines, but it’s all independent swimming. That’s what drives us.” There’s absolutely no lack of support once you decide you want to get in the water with everyone else.

Although the MBHS swimming family is new & growing, the environment it has created is already up to par with the supportive standard MBHS creates. Boudinot says, that “your success is entirely up to yourself. There’s team competition at meets, but your individual performance is what matters.”

Individual success supported by the individual success of others is exactly what MBHS is about. It creates a competitive environment where every wants to be their best while helping others be theirs. The MBHS swim team is already making great strokes in the right direction.
