Our Limited Lunch Options

Here at MBHS, students are privileged to outside lunch. This is something students appreciate because it’s 45 minutes of freedom that they have throughout the course of the day. Being able to go outside for lunch is something that we should all be happy to have, but we should also consider whether we have any good places to eat.

On 7th avenue, there aren’t many good restaurants available for students to eat a healthy lunch. There are places such as La Bagel Delight, and Five Guys, where students can get a good lunch, but going to the same place everyday might get boring and can be also be unhealthy.

Some restaurants on 7th avenue such as Just Salad, where they do sell healthy foods, have high prices that not all students are able to purchase on a daily basis. When restaurants or other food businesses sell their food for at high prices, places like Dunkin Donuts become an option, which isn’t necessarily a good choice.

Unhealthy foods are cheaper because business owners know that it will attract customers. According to American Public Health Association, “multiple studies have found that fast-food restaurants are systematically concentrated within a short walking distance of schools, giving children greater access to low-quality food.” In our case, this happens to be true. There are several fast-food restaurants or low graded restaurants that are around our area, but because the food being sold there is sold at a low price, that is where students will resort to.

7th avenue might not be the best place to go out for lunch, but because of school policy, we aren’t allowed to travel certain distances. Where you choose to go out to lunch must be within walking distance of MBHS, and because of that rule, it restricts some students as to where and what they eat for lunch.
