Students Express Feelings About the Girls’ Locker Room Situation

Kiara Lee, Staff Reporter

Many MBHS students are wondering when the girls’ lockers will be ready. Currently, MBHS female students are using a coat room that consist of hooks to hold jackets and shelves big enough to hold various items.

After speaking with a couple of female students, I realized that their main concern is the privacy and security of their belongings. When I mentioned the coat room, MBHS Seniors, Leilah Fagan and Meesa Wright said, “anybody can take your stuff” and “it’s not safe.”

Many of the girls feel their belongings are safer when kept in their backpacks or leaving their belongings in their advisor’s room. Millennium Brooklyn student Aliyah Latif says, “I don’t put my stuff there. I don’t feel like my stuff is safe there because people can pickpocket me or go through my bag without me knowing.”

The boys have a locker room that’s monitored by Christian, an MBHS staff member. He ensures that things aren’t stolen and that people treat the locker room with respect.

The Administration is hoping that Millennium Brooklyn girls will get their lockers soon. Assistant Principal and Advisor, Kevin Conway, says that the idea was that “there’s a boys locker room on this floor. We can use that locker room to give boys a locker for academic use. We have enough wall space to put in lockers for the girls.”

He’s very understanding to the girls’ situation and hopes that the temporary solution to give girls a place to keep their bags and coats is effective. He stresses that, “no one wants the girls’ lockers more than the Administration.”

He’s unsure of when the girls will get their lockers but he, Dr. Gioe, Mr. Franklin, and many others are involved in speeding up the process and getting the girls’ lockers here quickly.
