Seniors’ Attempt to Establish School Tradition Backfires

MBHS students were told to wear black on Monday, February 23rd by student body president, Jacalyn Goldzweig-Panitz. The news spread by mouth and social media (Facebook) weeks before Mid-Winter Break and even during the break. Goldzweig-Panitz stated that the only reason for coming up with this idea was so that “Seniors could actually feel a sense of pride and difference from the rest of the student body.” Spirit week incorporates the entire student body, but there are no “designated days for Seniors that make them stand out, like they do in other schools.”

The event did not go as planned. The students who saw the Facebook post or heard from other students did wear black. However, many forgot to wear the color or were not aware of the event. When questioned, a Senior, who asked to remain anonymous, stated that she did “not know why a lot of Seniors were wearing black.” She had to be told by her friends that the event was going on. But she did state that “if I knew about it, I would have worn black.”

Goldzweig-Panitz does not know if she will conduct another event like this again because of the poor response from her peers.
