Op-Ed: Clapping for Jeb Bush

Jeb Bush’s recent dropping-out of the presidential race has got me thinking deeply about the ways we perceive others, specifically politicians.

On the surface, he seems like a nice guy. He didn’t want to “insult his way into the White House,” he was willing to go off-script to discuss immigration with an antagonizer at a rally, and, besides his last debate, he seemed to keep his composure and try to remain professional among his running-mates (who were anything but). All politics aside, despite how people might perceive Jeb, he seems like a decent human being.

What seems to have turned him indecent (to coin a phrase) are the politics of the presidential race and the campaign surrounding him. Over $130 milion dollars was spent on his campaign, and what does he have to show for it now? He was pressured by (presumably) his family and his peers to go for the gold, only to find himself disqualified. George and George did it, why can’t he? Maybe it’s in the name, perhaps it’s his mother’s fault. Maybe people didn’t want a dynasty.

My guess is that it’s because of his personality. He never had a very powerful presence, and if you’ve ever seen the Please Clap video, you’ll see why. He’s reading a speech that a million politicians have read a million times. But that doesn’t make him a bad person! The American people clearly want a genuine president (as shown by growing support for Sanders and Drumpf). And Jeb wasn’t a genuine person, he was just some lousy politician… or was he?

Maybe Jeb’s person is just a regular dude. Maybe he’s not built to be president, and that’s fine! But it was mighty short-sighted of everyone who supported him to think that he could have made it. I mean, look at him! He looks morose and disappointed most of the time, on the campaign trail at least. I’m sure, however, that he’d be perfectly pleasant to have at your family’s quiet thanksgiving dinner. He’s polite, studious… meek, perhaps, but certainly not presidential, that’s for sure.
