Millennium Baseball: Headed To New Heights

Vincent Estella, Staff Reporter

Baseball is one MBHS’ more competitive sports programs, with a long and challenging off-season, but the team has some fresh new faces and a promising future.

I interviewed Brian Friedman, Athletic Director and baseball coach about how he keeps his players motivated through this long off-season. He said, “Every single person, regardless if they were on the team last year, or if it’s this first time I’ve ever met them, has to try out for a spot. The fact everyone has to earn their spot from the very beginning keeps people motivated to try their best.”

There are many new faces to the Millennium baseball team, both players and coaches. Friedman said, “We have (I believe) 6 freshman on the team.”

The coaching staff has also added Mike Fitzpatrick, a new bullpen coach, to help out pitchers and develop them as well as possible.

Friedman is rather fond of the team’s budding relationship with the Grand Street Campus athletic program, which has produced some high-level baseball talent, such as Dellin Betances, who, according to ESPN.com, is now a third year pitcher for the New York Yankees. Be on the look-out for that match-up this upcoming spring.
