In the Spotlight: Millennium Softball

Now that the basketball season is officially over, Millennium students are excited for the spring sports season. This year, fans have a new team to look forward to. Baseball has been the only spring sport played at Millennium for the past several years, but now we have a girls’ softball team.

Although this may be news to the MBHS community, this plan has been in motion for quite some time. Behind the scenes, individuals such as new coach, Brian McCarthy, have been pulling strings to make this season possible. McCarthy is excited to be able to coach this new team and has expressed his appreciation for everyone who worked hard to make it happen. He gives a lot of the credit to athletic director, Brian Friedman, saying “Coach Friedman put in a lot of work impressing the PSAL and making sure that the softball team could happen.” He also wanted to thank the the many donors who have provided the funds to run the team.

Coach Friedman dedicates his efforts to the female athletes who have been asking for a softball team over the last few years. He said, “There are a lot of female student athletes who haven’t been given the opportunity to represent their school. They want to wear the jersey and see their names on the website, and they deserve it.”

One of the student athletes who is excited for this season is sophomore Rebecca Estrella. She said, “I’m genuinely excited to get to know my team better, being that it’s barely been two weeks and we already have a strong bond.” That strong bond will definitely help the Phoenix in their approaching season.

This spring season should be an interesting one now that we have two fierce competitive teams to root for. Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, these athletes will get a chance to wear Millennium jerseys, and you can check out the softball team’s roster at PSAL.org.
